Summer is in full swing and that means plenty of time spent outdoors! If you’re like me, you’ve been using your deck as a great place to host get-togethers and cookouts. But with the heat coming up, it’s been getting a little too hot to enjoy being out there.
So I decided to build a DIY heat shield for my fire pit on the deck. It was really easy and it’s made a huge difference! Check out how I did it below.
DIY Heat Shield for Fire Pit on Deck

1. Using Tinfoil and Wood
I started by measuring the fire pit and cutting out a piece of plywood that is a bit bigger than the fire pit. Then I wrapped the plywood in foil, making sure to cover all the edges.
Next, I attached some L-shaped brackets to the bottom of the plywood so that it would be raised off the ground slightly. This helps to reflect the heat back up towards the fire pit.
Finally, I placed the diy fire pit heat shield around the fire pit and it’s been working great! The deck is now much cooler and we can enjoy being out there again.

2. Using Tiles
Tiles are a great way to create a heat shield for your fire pit. They are durable and can withstand high temperatures. Plus, they look great! I used ceramic tiles for my project, but you could also use stone or metal tiles.
To start, measure the area around your fire pit. Then head to your local home improvement store and purchase enough tiles to cover that area. I would also recommend buying a few extras, just in case you break any while working on this project.
Next, lay out the tiles around your fire pit. Once you have them all in place, use a tile adhesive to glue them down. Make sure to follow the instructions on the adhesive, as some require you to wait a certain amount of time before grouting.
After the adhesive has been set, use a grout specifically designed for fireplaces and outdoor use. Follow the instructions on the package, but generally, you will mix it with water and apply it in between the tiles. Use a rubber float to spread it around evenly and then wipe away any excess.
Let the grout dry for at least 24 hours before using your fire pit. And that’s it! You now have a beautiful and functional heat shield for your fire pit.
3. Using Metal Sheet
This is the most common and popular method. You will need a metal sheet, some sandpaper, and screws.
First, measure the circumference of your fire pit. Cut the metal sheet to size and then use the sandpaper to smooth out any sharp edges.
Next, screw the sheet into place around the fire pit.
This is the easiest and most effective way to create a heat shield. Simply place the metal sheet between your fire pit and the deck surface. You can use any type of metal, but we recommend using aluminum because it’s lightweight and easy to work with.

4. Using a Reflective Shield
You can also buy a reflective shield to place under your fire pit. These are made specifically for fire pits and reflect a lot of heat.
They’re a bit more expensive than tinfoil, but they’ll last longer and reflect more heat. You can find them online or at some home improvement stores.
Place the shield on the ground and put your fire pit on top of it. The shield will reflect the heat away from the deck and help keep things cooler.
