How to Dye Patio Furniture Cushions
You can save money by dyeing your patio furniture cushions rather than buying new ones.
Dye is an inexpensive way to update faded, stained or dirty-looking fabric and it’s also a great option for making mismatched pieces match again! Follow these steps below for how to do this project yourself.
You will need:
- Patio Cushion Covers
- Rit DyeMore for Synthetics ( Here On Amazon)
- 10 Gallon Pot (We Found The Perfect On Amazon)
- Tongs
- Liquid Dish Detergent
- Rubber Gloves
- Plastic Table Cover
The majority of outdoor cushions are made of synthetic materials (i.e. fabric that contains more than 35 percent polyester, acrylic, or acetate).
When dyeing synthetics, you’ll need to keep the temperature near boiling for the duration of the process, which means you’ll need to do it on your stovetop in a pot. As a result, you’ll need a pot large enough to hold your cushions.
I ordered this amazing pot from Amazon to complete my project in case you don’t have one large enough.
Uneven dyeing can also be caused by water-resistant coatings, sun fading, staining, and the material’s age or wear.
Step 1
Protect the work area with a plastic table cover and have paper towels on hand in case of spills. Gather your materials.
Step 2
Prewash cushion covers to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption for the best results. Allow to remain damp.
Step 3
One bottle of Rit DyeMore will dye one pound of fabric, as a general rule. Four bottles were used in this project because the cushions weighed 4 pounds.
Step 4
Fill the pot just above the top with water. To aid level dyeing, add 1 teaspoon of dish detergent.
Cover pot and heat water to just below boiling (200 F° or higher) on the stovetop. The key is to use enough water in the dyebath so that the fabric can move around freely.
Step 5
Add the four bottles of dye when the water begins to simmer. Put on your gloves. Keep the temperature at a low simmer for the duration of the dyeing process.
Step 6
Cushion covers should be added. Slowly and steadily stir. Stirring ensures a consistent color with no splotches.
Step 7
Remove from dyebath when the desired color is achieved. When wet, the fabric appears darker, but when dry, it appears lighter.
I dyed these cushions for 40 minutes long to get this color.
Step 8
The excess dye should be squeezed out. Using cool water, rinse until the water is clear.
Step 9
Rinse and dry in warm water with a mild detergent.
Step 10
Optional: Use an outdoor repellant like Scotchgard Water & Sun Shield to block UVA/UVB rays and prevent dye transfer and fading.
Step 11
All Done!
Can You Dye Outdoor Cushion Covers?
Yes, you can dye outdoor cushion covers. If the cushions are natural colors, you will need to use Rit Dye in your desired shade.
If they have been stained from weathering or other factors, it may be impossible to remove those stains and only help them fade with time as well as proper cleaning techniques such as using diluted dish soap on them regularly.
However, if this is not an option for you either because of cost or time constraints then there is no reason why using dye would negatively impact the condition of these types of items that we place outside all year round – even during winter months!
Can You Dye Polyester Outdoor Cushions?
Yes, you can. Polyester fabric is able to be dyed just like cotton. The difference between the two fabrics, though, is that polyester will not absorb dye as well and it may take more time for color changes to occur.
Is Dyed Outdoor Cushion Covers More Durable?
Yes, dyed outdoor cushion covers tend to last much longer than untreated ones simply because they are protected from the elements. The color will stay much fresher and vibrant for a longer period of time.
Is There A Risk To Dyed Cushion Covers?
There is always some risk that comes with dyeing anything – whether it be an outdoor cushion cover or your hair!
However, there aren’t any special risks when dying these fabric items as long as you follow all instructions provided by the manufacturer to ensure safety during this process.
Just make sure you do not leave the covers outside in direct sunlight after they have been dyed because this can cause damage to them due to sun exposure which may lead to fading over time (which defeats the purpose of why we want them colored in the first place).
Also keep in mind that if you are using a darker dye, it will take much longer to dry out and the risk of staining other objects in your home increases because this may cause them to bleed onto whatever is nearby.
Are Dyed Outdoor Cushion Covers Easier To Maintain?
Yes! Dyeing outdoor cushion covers means that they no longer require regular washing – which can be extremely annoying since they tend to get dirty very easily (especially when used outdoors).
With these fabric items now being protected by their new color, there’s no need for cleaning as often throughout each year.
This also helps with the longevity of the item itself so don’t worry about having to replace them anytime soon because all you’ll have left to do is maybe add a new color to them!
Conclusion
Dyeing your patio furniture cushions is a cost-effective way to update their look and extend their life. It’s also an easy DIY project that most homeowners can accomplish without professional assistance!
